Najib Razak was appointed prime minister of Malaysia in April 2009. He replaced Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to become the sixth prime minister of the country.
Mr. Najib has sought to portray himself as a liberal reformer capable of reversing the declining fortunes of his party — the United Malays National Organization — which has controlled Malaysia’s federal government since independence from Britain in 1957.
